“The government will intervene, there is money, even if it isn’t enough”. This is what the Minister for the Environment, Stefania Prestigiacomo, said in San Fratello, in the province of Messina, where last week a landslide forced part of the population to leave their homes. “We will finance specific projects – added Prestigiacomo – without distributing funds with no criteria. The money we have given in the past – she ended – was not spent in a correct way by the public administrations”.

In the meantime in San Fratello “the situation is extremely complicated, probably we won’t be able to recuperate some one hundred buildings and some business activities. The landslide is still moving and there are 400 buildings which have been damaged. We’ll probably manage to recuperate 200 of them, but for the others I still cannot say anything”. This is what the director of the Regional Civil Defence, Pietro Lo Monaco, said during a press conference in the fraction of Giampilieri, in the province of Messina, which was hit by a severe flood last 1st of October. Talking about the appeals of some citizens who do not want to return to their homes, which are considered safe by the civil defence, Lo Monaco said that “as far as the study of the area is concerned, it will be carried out by a highly specialized team, and if they say that some portions of the territory are safe, I will support the study”.
