A charter to protect visitors from nasty surprises, written in clear, simple and jargon-free language, was presented during a press conference at BIT International Tourism Exchange 2010 in Milan, by the Sicilian Consumer Protection Office. The Tourist Rights Charter will ensure the provision of more information to visitors choosing Sicily as a holiday destination, guaranteeing timely information relevant to their stay and safeguarding their rights in case of poor service.
“We are the first in Italy to produce such a guide” Nino Strano, regional director of tourism, proudly declared. “It’s true that its production is a legal requirement, but the fact that we are the first shows how much importance Sicily places on the protection of those tourists who have chosen our beautiful island for their holiday.”
The Charter contains information on tourist rights relating to holiday accommodation, timeshare contracts, and regulations relating to the respect and protection of local natural and cultural heritage. In addition there are details on the rights and obligations of tourist with regard to travel agencies, package holidays and package tours.
"This is a guide to give tourists new tools to protect themselves and to raise awareness of their rights in this sector.” explains Maria Castro, head of the Sicilian Consumer Protection Office. “The Charter was made possible with the help of the Department of Tourism, which will also distribute it widely via national and international fairs and events.”
